Google Music used to allow you to rate your songs from one to five stars. Though it was a feature that you had to add on, for those of us who did add it, we used it all the time to help sort and organize our music. Today - May 14, 2015 - Google removed this option. This is their response:
"We've decided to remove the 5-star Rating lab. This decision wasn't made lightly, but Thumbs Up/Down is integral for the future vision for Play Music and will be a central design point for our future releases."
Music isn't binary. Though the 5 Star rating system isn't terribly nuanced, many people relied on it.

We just hit 250 signatures and it proves that Google is wrong to treat our personal music libraries like a binary experiment. They think they can force this thumbs up system on us and ignore how we actually organize our collections. We are not backing down until they put our star ratings back.

5 star ratings were imported from iTunes, and supporting them allowed more playlist flexibility as smart playlists arent user creatable on GPM. No without 5 star system, its too manual of a process to produce playlists such as '5 star songs from the past 3 years'
I used the 5-star rating system all the time, to sort my music, to find songs I liked, and as a general ranking system. It was an optional feature before, so why not keep it optional (and disabled by default)? Please bring have the stars, Google.
I fondly remember transferring 5,000 song ratings one-by-one from iTunes to Google Music, and I've rated thousands more since. Please re-enable the lab, or at least send me the data so I can transfer the ratings to another music service.
Thumbs down only makes sense for radio channels where you're hearing music you don't know. Other than that the 5 star rating is a winner. My 4 and 5 stars were well organised, could always go to the 5 star when I didn't know what to listen to.
5 stars allowed for a 4/5 star highly-rated playlist. I used this all the time and had nearly 10,000 songs. 3 star songs that I didn't want to hear all the time but still not forget about were included in play music generated lists.

I agree that rating a song deserves the stars, just as I deserve to view the rating from 1-5 to help me chose. Thumbs up and thumbs down could be inaccurate for those of us who need more ratings, which I read and use whenever i am making a decision about my music.. I love the player, but I couldn't care less about the subscription features. However, it works amazingly well to stream my own music, and I would like to keep rating it. The thumbs up/down sounds like a smart idea for the shuffled radio aspect, but not for my own personal library.
