The 24th is a "mormon holiday" as much as the 4th is a Christian holiday. The 24th is about the pioneers who settled valleys in utah, pioneers who happened to be mormon. People aren't protesting the 4th because Christians signed the declaration of independence. They are both HISTORICAL holidays. Protest all you want. But stop playing the victim and saying the mormons are taking your 4th of july.

The fireworks are not what I want back; however, if the majority of people want to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks that is fine. What I want back is Independence Day celebration, not pioneer day celebration. I am not a Mormon. I am not a resident of Utah. I do not celebrate this holiday, and I do not want funds used for this celebration.

This is a national holiday!! It is so arrogant and selfish for the Mormon leaders of this community to think that they can misappropriate these funds for a religious holiday. It's a disgrace and shows the true colors of the Mormons - it's all about THEM with no regard for the rest of this community. Disgusting!

Disgusting and disgraceful! We should be able to celebrate our freedom over a religious holiday. Independence Day is America's largest celebration and Afton choose to stomp on it. A little glimpse of what's to come when the Temple is complete

Someone called this petition valid. "Valid" means having a basis in fact. I don't think we could call the petition valid when many of us were left with a lot of unanswered questions and those who've signed the petitions have done so for some extremely different, conflicting reasons. One person wrote that Afton would not have fireworks unless we signed the petition. Do we really think that all of the planning, emergency services personnel (EMS, Fire, & Law Enforcement), safety and staff arrangements will be made in less than 3 days? Some were upset about "reallocation" of funds without notifying the taxpayers. Is purchase of fireworks for one day instead of another actually a reallocation of funds? What budget category does it actually fit under - Tourism & Economic Development? Culture & Recreation? Miscellaneous? Would the Town need to notify everyone if they buy green garbage bags instead of black? (Although, yes, this is much bigger than plastic bags.) Some are angry about a supposed switch to a "religious" holiday. It isn't religious - it's cultural at best, mostly historical. Questions Unanswered: why the decision was made by the Town of Afton, what the exact arrangement was between towns, which towns made the arrangement and collaborated, why the State & Governor were brought into the petition wording as if the State had some kind of control over the Town's buying of fireworks... Obviously, I wasn't at the meetings & neither was the person(s) who created the petition. Maybe there were some good reasons for it. For example, there are emergency services personnel in our communities that have not been able to celebrate this huge holiday with their families for more than a decade. It would be a kinda cool thank-you from us to see some activities rotate between the communities and see those families actually get to celebrate (even a part of) the holiday together. That's just one example, I'm sure if we chose to resist the urge to get angry and jump into
