Brendan's Law Comprises of 3 amendments to existing legislation on death due to drunk driving:

1. Setting aside an offenders driving license without prejudice once charged. This will be of tremendous assistance for bereaved families still coming to terms with a sudden, unjust bereavement. ( subject to legal approval. )

2. Mandatory sentences of a minimum 6 years to a maximum of 9 years with no suspended sentences regardless of their previous good character.

3. Mandatory 20 - 25 years  disqualification without recourse to the courts after a period of time - say 10 years on the basis of cruel and unjust punishment.

The latest surge in support has moved this proposal into the offices of two legislative aides who are now reviewing the language of the amendments. I am preparing the formal brief for our meeting with the policy committee later this week.

My Husband was knocked down by a drunk driver, thankfully he survived but the guy that knocked him down is still driving drunk. Our justice system is a disgrace.

Well done to Brendan's Mum initiating this petition. Something has to be done before many more lives are lost. Look at the number of cars in pub car parks any night of the week and ask?? How many of the owners are non drinkers ??

I fully support this campaign. My brother, who was 17 at the time, lost his right leg, his right testicle and had brain stem damage after being hit by a drunk driver 50 yards from the house. It took 4 yrs for case to come to court. Driver received £75.00 fine and suspended 6 month jail sentence. It was this that led us to starting up our Drive4life road safety awareness programme 12 years ago.

This is the very least that bereaved families and all road users deserve. None of us have the right to risk others lives and abuse of rights should result in termination of these rights.Keep up your excellent work I know it must be very difficult.
