The school administration finally folded and approved our request for navy and black long pants. It took way too long to get common sense through their heads but we forced their hand.

Hello to all High School Students of NIST,

It has come to our attention that uniform bottoms at NIST seem to be an arising issue. We do want to fix this, and we have a proposal that we hope to get approved by the concerned teachers.

Our proposal is to allow for Black or Navy Blue Long Pants (non-school bought) for all high school students to wear, aside from the general bottoms (shorts/pants/skirts) provided by the NIST School Shop. There will be conditions associated with this, as specified below. We are a school, with a huge reputation that we want to maintain, that is why these conditions have been put into place- as a compromise that we hope everyone can agree with.

Conditions:

- Color of the pants must be either plain black or navy blue: patterns, designs, lighter shades, denim colored or other colors will not be tolerated.

- A reminder that you're judgement needs to be used about the appropriateness of these pants, i.e. ripped jeans or lose/informal pants (including boho pants or track pants) for example, will not be allowed.

- This is specific to length of pants as this petition is in relation to long (i.e almost ankle length pants). Any pants wanting to be worn at knee length or other odd lengths must follow school regulations.

Guys remember that we are trying to compromise and do this to your best interests so please don't take advantage of this. Once this gets approved, if it does, we are giving you the freedom to use your judgement based on the conditions but that doesn't mean you make poor decisions because teachers will be in every position to tell you off if you do so. We are trying to integrate this into the school uniform procedures, it is not an external opportunity for you to wear whatever you would like.

Just a reminder that this is not something official yet so it doesn't mean this can be implemented and you can be walking around in long pants as you please. We will keep you posted on any updates and inform you of our meetings with whomever it concerns. Talk about it among yourselves but try not to go around to teachers or faculty regarding it yet.

The school administration can no longer pretend that this uniform policy is working when so many of us are clearly demanding a change. We have generated enough momentum to force a real conversation instead of their usual dismissive silence. It is time for them to stop hiding behind outdated rules and start listening to the students who actually have to wear these clothes every day.

Finally! School shop pants never fit right anyway so this would be a huge help.

The current pants are so stiff and awful to sit in all day. Really hope this goes through.

I think this is a great initiative for students to be comfortable when learning. We spend so much time at school, that I believe that we should be appropriately comfortable in the duration of our education, while still being able to adhere to school policies.
