Our children should be able to enjoy their meals during school lunch. Current conditions during lunchtime at Bowditch are unsafe and unsanitary for our children. Swarms of seagulls harass kids, steal their lunches, and drop excrement on our kids clothes and on their food. This is not only unsafe and unsanitary, but also could lead to diseases, missed school, and trouble learning due to being hungry! Children are complaining of poop on their clothes daily. Student had bird poop get in their eye. Are we waiting for an outbreak to do something? Bowditch Middle School - step up and correct this. This is NOT OK!

Updates

February 15, 2024

The school administration remains silent despite the constant reports of students being harassed during their lunch hour. I am spending my evenings documenting these incidents because the health risks are becoming too serious to ignore.

The momentum behind this is undeniable and it proves that parents are done watching their children eat in a hazardous environment. I am exhausted by the state of this lunch area but seeing this level of backing keeps me moving forward.

Fix this immediately please. Kids shouldnt have to deal with aggressive birds while trying to eat a sandwich.

My son came home with bird droppings on his jacket again today. Its disgusting and he is terrified to eat outside now. Get it together.

Temporary arrangements should have been made prior to the construction. Poor planning and management on your part Bowditch!

Given the proximity of the school to the Bay, we need to have a solid plan in place so that the children can eat their meals in peace and not get attacked by seagulls.

The District wants to thank all of the community members who have shared their concerns. The District has taken immediate action to respond to your concerns, and has a plan to have temporary tents erected on Tuesday, February 20. The temporary tents will provide sufficient shade for our students. We are also evaluating a more permanent solution to address this issue for the duration of construction, and will keep the community apprised of our plans. We want to thank you again for sharing your concerns. Patrick Gaffney, Deputy Superintendent and Chief Business Official Amy Ruffo, Director of Facilities and Constructdion
