Tonight the Regional District 18 Board of Education (BOE) will vote on the proposed school budget for 2011-2012. Please sign this petition in favor of the budget proposed by Betty Osga last week which includes a 5.6% increase. Our BOE has asked for our input.

In summary, the budget for 2011-2012 as presented, maintains the current level of programs and class sizes. As planned, it carries the largest  jump in debt service but the operating budget is the same as last year. IF approved it will go to referendum in May for the taxpayers of Lyme and Old Lyme to vote on.

FACTS: The operating budget portion represents salaries and benefits, programs and building operations. Their is a minimal increase of 1.2% or $354,075 that  maintains the current level of programs and class sizes as approved by the Board.  Importantly, this increase benefits our towns as we are eligible to continue to receive educational grant money from the State.

Most of the budget increase is due to the debt service which is the principal and interest on bonded projects. The increase of 4.4% or $1,279,120 for the high school and other school renovations has been reduced over original projections due to favorable borrowing rates and wise refinancing. Our BOE and administration have developed a budget that is now 2.49% less than the original projection of 8.09%.  For more information on this please go to http://www.region18.org and click on the tab for District and Budget Book.

Please sign this petition to let the Board of Ed know that you favor the budget as presented by our Superintendent, Betty Osga.

Please email this petition to all your friends! The Vote is TONIGHT!

March 9, 2011

The scale of this support has secured us a formal meeting with members of the Board of Education later this week. I am currently finalizing the presentation that outlines why the proposed budget structure is fiscally responsible for our taxpayers.

Class sizes are already getting too big. We cant keep cutting and expect the same results for our kids. Do the right thing.
