As a White alumna from the 1980s, I have always been curious about what it must be like to be Black at Appalachian in the midst of a predominantly White rural mountain community. I believe Black students’ stories and understand they are calling for action because of their love for Appalachian. I pray the administration will open up and listen to the stories without worrying about maintaining control of a happy narrative - and call in more Black alumni to share their stories and engage in the good work of truly making App not just more diverse but a place where Black students and alumni feel heard, valued, and included - because App is their home where they belong.
Also, a word of support for Dr. Fleming who has made heroic contributions to equity and inclusion efforts since his time as a student. Huge respect!

As an App State alum I am appalled and mortified to learn of the administrations treatment of black students and their concern. This needs to be rectified immediately.

As an alumnus of ASU, I sign in support of the Black students at my Alma Mater. A rich education means we need to hear from diverse voices, not silence them to continue to hear what makes those in power comfortable.
