Bill number S06793 “Replaces the terms “mentally retarded”, “mental retardation” and variants thereof with “intellectually disabled” and “intellectual disability” (New York State Assembly, n.d.). This policy proposes to change the outdated and offensive terminology to politically correct terms. It simply looks into replacing the terms with more respectful words that are up to date.

This policy’s major intended and anticipated outcomes would be to bring more awareness around the topic of using correct terminology to different populations such as individuals with an intellectual disability. The end goal would be to bring enough awareness to stop these inappropriate terms from being used all together. It would target a large population and help in showing more respect to others. Using correct terminology when talking to someone is important.

Recently there has been a lot of progress towards discouraging these words in conversation. The next step is to change this verbiage in written law and policy. By signing this bill you will help bring awareness to this topic and help to create change!
