Knoxville has a growing bicycle culture and Knox County bicycling on lovely, winding and dangerous roads is increasing. Every year, every day, more locals are using bikes in our city, or are attempting to ride bicycles for transportation and commuting. Since there is an inherently dangerous interaction when bicycles and vehicles share the same roads, without clearly marked bike lanes, we think the City and County Commission officials as well as the TN DOT have a duty to address the infrastructure and safety needs of the cycling community.

We are asking for a minimum of the following to be added to all new road development around the Knoxville core and request that existing major thoroughfares throughout the city include the following:

1. adequate signage indicating to cyclists the existence of dedicated lanes and promoting awareness of cyclists to motorists

2. addition of dedicated bike lanes whenever possible on existing roadways and the inclusion of such lanes on new roads and roads with lane increases

3. properly and regularly maintenance of these lanes to facilitate bicycle transportation year-round

4. and installation of bike locking facilities throughout the city core.

Updates

March 5, 2018

I have finalized a formal briefing document outlining the specific infrastructure requirements for the City and County Commission. This report will be submitted to the planning department next week to ensure our proposal is included in the upcoming public hearing agenda.

At least paint current bike lanes to distinguish them from the rest of the road.

Knoxville still going backward for on road cycling. Poor protection from legal structure and almost no movement on protected bike/ped infrastructure

We need more bike lanes in Knoxville, especially on main roads, i.e., Kingston Pike.

Greenways are great, but until they are fully linked (which will be years) we need dedicated bike lanes in many parts of the city (which can be implement much sooner). Dedicated lanes from greenways to points of interest (downtown, old city, happy holler, Bearden, etc) should be priority.

The addition of dedicated bike lanes would alleviate some stress experienced by both cyclists and drivers. It would also encourage a more active culture, combating our state’s reputation as one of the most obese in the country. If participation and usage are any indication, our parks and greenways have offered a great return on our investment. Let’s expand on that by making our city safer, more active, and more accessible.

Desperately needed.

I have never lived in a city that was so hazardous and unprepared for pedestrians and bicyclists. No wonder the average weight of residents has gone up!
