- This is not a petition for the name Red Raider, but rather a petition to better the process.
We are asking the Melrose School Committee to give more time and process to the Mascot/Name issue and not vote on April 12. 2022. We implore the school committee to engage the community in a robust process, not simply sit back and receive public comment.
We also want the community and students to be given the opportunity to vote on other options presented ("Raiders with a new mascot", "Melrose with no mascot" etc) and allow more student and/or community involvement. We believe the process thus far has been unfair and has lacked transparency

The Melrose School Committee plans to vote on this measure on Tuesday, April 12th, at 7 pm. The meeting will be held in the City Council Chamber at City Hall. Show up and make your voice heard. Thank you.

Class of 1985 member of the football, track and marching band, metco student. Do not change the name..change mascot if you must but the name stays as is .
Lack of transparency on this important community issue is astonishing. Put to a vote including high school students.
If the goal of this committee is to tech a consensus regarding the future name of the ten be it to remain Red Raiders or to change it then the process should be transparent and everyone’s voice should be heard. On the other hand if the decision to change the name has already been made then why put on a show.
The greater the diversity of groups afforded the opportunity to have input on this or any other community controversy the better. It is what democracy is about.
To date, school committee has never engaged the public--or each other--in a dialogue as to whether or not the name needs to change. According to the chair of the SC, they will discuss and vote on this question first as a critical part of the process. I look forward to this part of the process.
I have lived in Melrose the majority of my life and thnee name RED RAIDER has not alot been a problem. Why not leave it alone !!!
