Few people realize that there is a natural reef and tidal pool on the shores of Bedford Basin in Nova Scotia. This beautiful marine and wildlife habitat will soon be destroyed as part of Bedford's infill project to create condominiums in an urbanized waterfront. This includes a substantial reef containing a large inter-tidal zone teeming with marine life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAoenfm0gOI to view Youtube video The Halifax Regional Municipality and the Waterfront Development Corporation have unveiled their Bedford Waterfront Design Study. Download and view the design study here:http://www.halifax.ca/visionhrm/bedfordwaterfront/ Petition to Save the Bedford Basin Reef Petition to the Halifax Regional Municipality We, the undersigned residents of Halifax Regional Municipality, draw the attention of HRM to the following: THAT there is a natural reef and tidal pool on the shores of Bedford Basin in Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia that is home to a variety of important species including: Atlantic Salmon, Gaspereaux, American Eels, starfish, jellyfish, barnacles, and a variety of shore birds, including Osprey, common terns, and spotted sandpipers. THAT this important natural habitat will soon be destroyed by the Halifax Waterfront Development Corporation Limited’s ongoing infilling project to create land for the Bedford Waterfront Development Project creating a more urbanized waterfront; THAT this activity contravenes the Federal Fisheries Act that states: (1) "No person shall carry on any work or undertaking that results in the harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat." - Section 35, Fisheries Act, THAT we are concerned about future infilling projects that will negatively impact natural habitats in an increasingly urbanized shoreline, THEREFORE, we request that the Halifax Regional Municipality impose an immediate moratorium on infilling any part of the Halifax Harbour, including the present development of the Bedford Basin Waterfront Development Project.
