Two summers of local drummers and no one has complained until now. Who is complaining? People who aren't real Durhamites, who moved here for jobs, not local entertainment. Damn the out-of-towners. Full speed ahead!!

This ban is all about what makes Durham great. Keep the music going. Even I don't go to ed before 8:30!

I live in the apartment complex with which the drummers have had a dispute. To be clear, though, it was only a single resident has complained and many others have publicly supported the group. I, of course, am an enthusiastic supporter of the group, as I feel their presence brings a new opportunity to experience the culture and diversity that Durham brings to its dwellers. Please continue to produce your melodic and ecstatic tunes. I hope we can make Durham residents a more diverse and fully appreciated group together.

Whoever complained must've hated the Rebirth Brass Band last Friday! Don't let one or two curmudgeons turn Durham into Cary. Can we raise money to send the complainers there? jk

They have a permit to perform. Just like anyone else does. If people don't like it, move elsewhere.

Moving to a city means embracing that city and its arts; not shutting them down. Let's keep Durham drumming!

Liberty resident here. I cannot fathom what super important activity is going on between 6:30 - 8:30 and so susceptible to a drum beat.

Durham is culture. Durham is diversity. Durham Central Park supports both, and Batala is a beautiful example of the citizens of this city coming together to create something unique and beneficial on so many levels for the community at-large. The police harassment needs to stop...this is not the way the Durham community resolves conflicts. And it's certainly not something that can't be resolved by a mediated, mature conversation. Stop hiding behind the police and talk it through to come to some sort of agreement.

This is absurd. It's a public park, and Batalá is a performance art group. Residents nearby should be able to "tough it" through regular practices - and concerts -> close windows, put on some headphones, take a walk in the opposite direction. Maybe the offended parties should ask for an apartment on the opposite side of the complex.

Batala Durham is a microcosm of downtown Durham: vibrant, energized, full-of-life... and, yes, loud. Central Park is often loud, because it's an urban hub of activity. People who like peace and quiet probably shouldn't move across the street from Central Park... with its Friday night concerts and Saturday morning Farmer's market and all. You know those tee-shirts you see around town: "Durham, it's not for everyone." Yeah, that. Here's the thing: maybe you force Batala to practice somewhere else. But, if they bug you, chances are you're not going to like living downtown. Just sayin. #Durm

Batala is one of the great parts of Durham culture. Let them practice.

Perhaps the the person that has made the complaint needs to buy a drum and find some happiness.

As a 15 year resident of Durham, and as a musician and social worker, I know how important music, community and how those two things support each other are to our unique social landscape. Stopping Batalá from doing what they do, is stopping who Durham is and has been before all these newcomers came. If you came to Durham because you love Durham, you will strive to only find ways to bring more to our city, and support what makes us great, not take away the things that make it what it is in favor of silence. This is a city, Batalá is what our city sounds like.

It is sooooo frustrating that this is even an issue. Batalá should be able to practice their music in a park during the day.

The residents wanted to be where things are happening...don't like it, move back to the burbs.
