Bandelier Elementary start time and unpaid teachers

Teachers should be paid extra when extra time is required of them.

Many of our kids walk, and now they will be walking in the dark thru winter… this is not safe!

Asking teachers for unpaid labor is absolutely ridiculous. I want the people responsible for my child’s education to be paid a living wage and given unerring support not to be taken advantage of!!!

This is a horrible idea for young children to be up so early. This will only lead to tired kids, which will slow learning and attention spans. Also when will teachers have time for lessons plans and extra work they have to do? What are the plans for the kids with the extra early drop off time, ask already the underpaid, over worked teachers? This will also put parents in a bind that have children in multiple grade levels, there is an hour and forty five minute difference between elementary school children and middle school starts.

We transfer into Bandelier. It's a 20 minute drive for us to get to school. We have discussed it and feel that due to one child being in special education at Bandelier it was best to not find a closer school. Because of this though my youngest who is 6 will be getting up at 5:30 in order to get all the kids ready for school and out the door. That is not a healthy time for a small child to get up and then be in school for 7 hours following an early wake up time. This early start will lead to many more children acting out at school simply from being tired.

This is not right! This is unfair to the teachers and unhealthy for the children! Please rescind this directive now.

This will make getting a child fed and to school much harder than it is now. Children unable to focus will litter the classroom. Asking teachers to do more is ludicrous. We already under pay our teachers. This is unrealistic. It is the wrong answer.

We live across the street from Bandelier and are considering a different school because of the 730 start time. Our soon to be kindergartener can barely wake up at 730. Please reconsider!

Although I support middle and high school students later start per AAP longtime recommendations, it also applies to our elementary aged children. Our school is walking-biking for many of the families who attend and arriving when it is dark is fairly untenable. I would encourage the district to take a more measured approach to the changes at our school as there are mandatory changes to the school day length, the summer length and breaks throughout the year that are already quite disruptive.

Use some commons sense here. Students and teachers reporting @ 7:30 am is unreasonable and will foster less learning due to lack of needed rest. Foolish idea!

This is a drastic change for students, staff and parents. 730 am is too early for our elementary family

This is a moronic change just to make an attempt to get more high schoolers to graduate at the cost of the younger kids

Teachers will have zero prep time. On average, teachers earn 40k a year (sometimes between 27k - 90k *rarely 90k*):and with a 6% increase for 1-2 hours more (varying by school) causes teachers salaries to increase 2k (40k to 42k) per year. Students lose valuable family time, sleep (who goes to sleep at 6:30 for older grades). Staff, Teachers alike will leave and pursue new jobs because of less pay and more time. It isn't realistic to have teachers wake up at 5:00 to get to school. It endangers kids by walking to school in the dark, cars can hardly see anyways but at early hours, it reduces visibility by a bunch. This needs to change!

Teachers should be paid for their work before and after the school bell. Their work is demanding and we will lose them if we don’t appreciate them.

Our little ones health and welfare should not be ignored or pushed aside. How will they possibly get their all important 10-12 hours rest.

This schedule change is unsafe for our kids

I anticipate that our two kids (twins) who are currently in 3rd grade and thriving in the enrichment program at Bandelier will have to miss first period on a regular basis if the planned change goes into effect and school starts at 7:30. Both of us (their parents) work in the Emergency Department at UNM hospital and get off work at around midnight many nights. We will simply not be able to get the kids to school in time, and the effect trying to do so would have on all of our sleep cycles would be devastating.

Our elementary children need adequate rest. I support this petition.
