There is a direct connection between animals being frightened (in some cases to death) and/or attacking people and the use of fireworks which produce loud bangs. More over many people find fireworks annoying or frightening. It is also a drain on our emergency services (already under pressure) with fire, ambulance and police services work load increasing by a huge amount over the firework period. Support this petition to ban fireworks from public sale and/or change the law on the sale and use of fireworks. Please see the FACTS below: 1) Calls to 999 increase by as much as 30% (information quoted from the Yorkshire Police) 2) Most of Australia has now banned the use of fireworks by the public 3) 5,000 birds estimated to have died in one night in Arkansas due to fireworks 4) In 2001 a survey of Scottish vets showed 10,000 animals died due to fireworks 5) According to the Campaign for Firework Safety in 2002 there were nearly a hundred cases of fireworks being used as a weapon 6) In 2011 in Somerset seven people died and 51 were injured in a single incident due to fireworks 7) In 2013 the RSPCA dealt with 436 cases involving fireworks 8) It is estimated by the RSPCA that nearly 4 million dogs suffer due to fireworks every year 9) Up to 90% of vets support a ban on fireworks 10) 1000 people each year are injured by fireworks, ten of whom will go blind. I suggest the law be changed as follows:- 1) Ban the sale of fireworks to the public and/ or make it illegal and arrestable to let off fireworks at any time other than for one day for certain festivals (E.G. Guy Fawkes, Chinese New Year etc) 2) Ban the use of any firework that produces a loud noise 3) Include private property under current legislation regarding letting off fireworks (current law only makes it illegal to set off fireworks in a public place) 4) Further restrict the sale of fireworks and tighten up the regulations on who can sell them Please be sure to support this petition and pass it to friends and family so we can deliver it to the Prime minster and stop all our lives being blighted by this dangerous and outdated practice.
