With the proposed closure of Robert Morris Elementary by the Philadelphia School District, I support the proposal by the Bache-Martin Home and School Association (HSA), Bache-Martin Elementary School, and the Center City Schools Coalition to expand the current catchment for Bache-Martin to include the entire Fairmount neighborhood,creating a true“neighborhood” school. This expansion wouldaffect all households living south of Girard Avenue down to Pennsylvania Avenue.
There are several benefits for the students:
Safety – children would not have to cross a major road (Girard Avenue) to walk to school
Distance – for most of the proposed area to be added, Bache-Martin is located closer to these families than W.D. Kelley and the new Vaux Elementary
Adding more seats at a high performing school – Bache-Martin has an SPI of 6; W.D. Kelley is a 10, and the new Vaux Elementary (Meade and Reynolds) would be a 9. This would give students from Robert Morris (SPI 8) the opportunity to attend a higher performing school.

Keep our schools local. We need to look out for our kids and make sure they arent crossing dangerous streets just to get to class.
WHY are we making little kids walk that far when there is a perfectly good school right in the neighborhood? fix this.
Robert Morris closing is a shame but this plan helps soften the blow for the families affected by the rezoning.
My kids walk to school every day and crossing Girard is terrifying. This move is common sense for our neighborhood safety.
This is a no brainer. Keep the catchment local and keep the kids off the major roads.
