Started by Anguilla Road-Users 6 years, 3 months ago

Dog attacks are becoming more frequent and a serious public hazard to the Anguillans using the roads as a primary form of commuting or exercising (walking, jogging, running, or cycling). In the past few months (even before COVID-19), there have been countless stories of dog attacks and biking accidents due to dogs leaving the pet-owners’ property and chasing down walkers and bicyclists. THIS MUST STOP!

In no way is this petition advocating the poisoning or unethical death of dogs but is demanding that the Department of Agriculture and the Royal Anguilla Police Force get involved and enforce pet-owners to safely confine their dogs in their own property. By fencing or tethering their dogs in a safe, humane, and escape-proof enclosure, pet-owners are protecting both road-users and their dogs. Owning pets is a great privilege and this responsibility should be taken seriously. Improper care of these animals becomes a public issue, especially when road-users are at risk of close-calls, serious injury, or even death.

The Department of Agriculture and the Royal Anguilla Police Force must get involved to keep Anguillan road-users safe!

Please sign this petition and let your voice be heard. Forward this petition to other road-users.

Updates

April 23, 2020

The Department of Agriculture and the police are still sitting on their hands while our roads remain dangerous traps. I am tired of hearing stories about people being chased and terrorized by loose dogs because owners refuse to secure their property. We are pushing for a meeting to force these officials to do their jobs before someone gets killed.

We walk. I run. Not much problem so far. There are however 2 pit bulls who are often running loose just past Ocean Terrace Condos on the left. There is a pen but the dogs escape.

This is long overdue. There are five dogs on one property in the area where I live that's a constant harrassment every morning.

I've been bitten years ago for this same reason and i believe there are many ways to keep your dog on your property even if it is not fenced or has a wall, and if you cant keep your pet on your premises you shouldn't have a pet dog or cat, in other places around the world you could go to prison for your pet if its even abused.

Some 20 years ago I almost got knocked off my bike trying to escape from a dog and I never went back cycling since.

I used to regularly ride my bike on Anguilla’s roads, but no longer really feel safe doing so because of dogs on the loose.

Owner of dogs and dangerous pets, please let us cooperate with each other. We understand you love your pets, but we will also appreciate if we can enjoy our pastime , without the obstruction of the above attacks. Again, please tender your cooperation with this appeal

A very good idea.Presons need to restrain dogs ,so that they are not a danger to persons walking or cycling on the road.
