As many of you know, we lost a dear friend, classmate, and active duty military officer in May. Just a few weeks after graduating from Sanford, on May 25th, 2019, Augie Gonzalez, his two daughters (Noelle and Gwen), and his 8-year-old son (Nick) were traveling to their next duty station at Fort Carson, Colorado. While traveling through Tennessee, Augie and his two daughters were killed in a tragic car accident. His son Nick survived. Augie’s wife, Melissa, had previously flown to Colorado with their newborn baby boy, Gabe. She received notification of their passing shortly after landing there.

Those of us who knew Augie well would like to place a memorial somewhere here at Sanford in honor of Augie and his two beautiful daughters. Augie loved Sanford. His contributions to our school as a student, Downing Scholar, and Carlucci Fellow and his incredible service to our country are something we are all very proud of. We feel a small plaque placed somewhere here at Sanford would be a respectful and appropriate way to honor him and his family.

In order to initiate the process of placing a memorial at Sanford, we are asking for your support through a digital signature on this petition.

The administration at Sanford is still hiding behind bureaucratic red tape instead of honoring a man who gave everything for this country. I am tired of their silence and stalling tactics while we wait to pay proper tribute to Augie and his girls.

Heartbreaking news. Thinking of Melissa and little Nick during this impossible time.

Augie was always so kind to everyone he met. He will be missed so much by the class of 2019.

We lost a good one. A memorial is the least we can do for him and the kids.

Augie was a great guy and a true leader at Sanford. He deserves to be remembered here.
