In response to a recent editorial, the United Employees of
Columbia Gorge Community College, AFT-Oregon Local 4754, want the Gorge
community to know we are committed to furthering the quality of public higher
education in our community.
We are united in our mission to guarantee our students have the tools they require to be successful.
Our days are spent educating, assisting, mentoring, and guiding students and potential students. We are dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive and fulfilling educational experience. As invested educators, we want to ensure our students have the best learning environment possible. Thus, we will continue to raise our voices when we see injustice, unfairness or misinformation.
We stand together to resolve issues affecting our college community, such as campus security and staff layoffs.
Together we're working to create an atmosphere of openness
and fairness with the college community and college administration. We are
eager to work with the administration to create solutions to these important
issues and cultivate a better educational experience, and will continue to be
open and honest at the table when discussing these topics.
We are united in this effort as: instructors, custodians, administrative assistants, accounting specialists, facilities technicians, instructional assistants, computer support technicians, payroll and benefit specialists and will continue to provide the best educational experience to our students as they maneuver through the world of higher education.
To do anything less, as some members of college's board have recently suggested, is unthinkable. Please stand with us in our efforts to improve the education experience at CGCC, because your students are our priority.

The long days spent trying to get a fair response from the administration are wearing on us all. We are still meeting behind the scenes to address these layoffs and security gaps despite the ongoing silence from the top.

The response to this letter is heavy and humbling because it shows just how many of you recognize the strain our college community is under. This exhaustion is real but seeing this level of backing confirms that we are fighting the right battle.

this letter does not address the budget mismanagement issue, should we not comment on the effect of layoffs and lack of foresight in projecting cash flows for the past years
Students are our priority. When administrators make budget decisions that adversely effect student success while maintaining administrators' status quo, we will make our voices heard.
I have initiated a formal complaint about the failure of the school to notify the staff and faculty about a student with a demonstrated history of violence. Additionally, this complaint makes issue of the school's failure to properly document and report the prior incident. The purpose of this effort is to force the school to acknowledge and correct their failure via procedures established in the employee handbook. I'd like this letter to be more direct and forceful, however, will sign it with the understanding that increasing pressure will be applied. I hereby volunteer my services to personally escort certain individuals off campus when the time becomes necessary.
I feel that this statement would be stronger without mentioning the Union. As John stated, it isn't a union issue. Thanks for all your hard work in getting this letter out!
United we stand and our student thrive, divided we fall and our students suffer.
I can only hope that openness, fairness and safety will soon be the focus of the president's office and the board of directors. My only suggestion is that the list of positions are reorganized to simple alphabetical. -Rob

Is it a good idea to mention the union? I don't think of this as a union issue, and it certainly has nothing to do with our contracts. I also suspect that might turn off some reader.
