Students are often penalized for having piercings, brightly coloured hair or the wrong coloured coat.

While we accept that uniform is an important aspect of school life, there are more important things to focus on such as pastoral care and education.

Many teachers we have spoken to have stated that they have to spend too much time focused on the way their students look rather than teaching them important parts of the syllabus. The argument often given by leadership teams is that they are teaching us to follow dress codes in preparation for the work place, however upon research we found many people with body modifications such as tattoos and piercings have high paid jobs or are university graduates. Therefore we are petitioning for a change in policy which allows students to have self identity and to express themselves using their appearance.

Updates

January 29, 2014

I have finished drafting a formal proposal to present to the school board that outlines why current uniform policies hinder classroom productivity. We are currently scouting for a faculty member willing to co-sponsor this reform during the upcoming budget review meeting.

I totally agree! School tells us to be ourselves but as soon as we do one thing to express ourselves we're told to get in line and be like everyone else at the school. It's ridiculous.

my hair colour does not change my grades or how i do in my exams, its so unfair that teachers waste time checking my coat instead of helping us learn

You deserve to express yourself anyway you like and schools shouldn't force you to change.

kids these days copy each other enough already we need our own identity not someone elses and not have someone telling them what to be and what to wear, normal clothes aren't distracting, taking student out of their lessons for not wearing the correct uniform is.

We shoud be allowed piercings, as people said it dosnt disract our learning, yeah i know theres a uniform policy, but then the school wants us to be who we are, do what makes us feel like ourself, some people, example me, have peringcings to make them feel like there true self, to have confidene, self esteem, within them, we should be allowed to wear them but to a limit of how many were allowed, as of hair, does hair olour really matter?, obviously some bright colours are a little stupid but still, it should be allowed to a certain exstent
