As an art student in the 80s at a different institution that did not have 24-hr access, I can vouch for the near impossible chance for advancement without it.

I hope the school can reopen 24 hours a day. As art students, our creation often needs a space that is not limited by time, and the current opening hours seriously affect the preparation of late-night creation and layout of critique.
At the same time, I would like to ask: where do the high tuition fees and technology fees we pay every semester go? With limited equipment and a large number of students, how can the school ensure that every student can use resources fairly and reasonably if it is not open for 24 hours?
Such restrictions make it difficult for us to complete the learning and creation that should be guaranteed.

Imagine coughing up that kind of obscene money, and the school still can’t even afford proper overnight access. Why don’t they just be upfront with students and admit: you’re basically paying for your own damn art studio in downtown Chicago, fully stocked with machines and materials, because we sure as hell won’t provide it at night. LMAO. And the cafeteria? Absolute garbage. The food tastes like crap, yet they still have the audacity to overcharge for it. With tuition prices like this, the least they could do is hire real chefs who actually know how to cook, instead of serving prison slop at luxury prices. XD

I'm a fashion student, and my creations are heavily reliant on the classroom and the sewing machine. If I lose the opportunity to work at night, I don't think I can guarantee the completion and quality of my work. I absolutely need the time to work at night.

When we enrolled our Son at SAIC we were told he would have 24hr access to the studios. He had his choice of some other really good schools but this pushed him to go with SAIC. Classic bait and switch. The schools is one of the most expensive art schools in the country and has very high enrollment. Totally unacceptable. Our son is in his senior year and as the people who have been paying for it, this leave a bitter taste for us.

This is one of the main reasons that our son decided to attend SAIC and he frequently uses the facilities well past 10:30pm. We are absolutely FURIOUS with this incredibly short sighted decision and will not be quiet about it after having paid hundreds of thousands in tuition.

My student is a Senior now and did some of their best work at night in the studios when it’s quiet. Also on the weekends. Their apartment space is far away and does not allow for “messier” art projects. This is really detrimental to an artist’s development and freedom. We understand financial constraints but surely a compromise of “open till midnight” on specific days. And maybe have one day when it’s open 24 hrs. 10 pm is too early, as some classes take all day, and some classes end at that time.

The decision to take away overnight hours is truly harmful to our student community. This isn’t business school. It’s art school with creative atypical students who thrive after hours and need this time to create their best work. This decision will do actual damage to my son’s mental health and overall performance.
