Ever since Akwaaba Oil Refinery became operational in the area, I have having sleepless nights. This is not because I have a manufacturing factory just close by but I fear for the lives of my employees, customers and my own life. The pungent smell gets trapped in our offices that we have no option than to breathe in the gases at the detriment of our lives. Do we have leaders in this country and why should Akwaaba Oil Refinery be allowed in an already developed and populated area like ours. I am by calling on the leadership of this country, The Parliament of the Fourth Republic, The Minister of Trade and Industry, The Minister of Interior to raise up and act to save us from this poisoning.
Akwaaba Oil Refinery must be stopped and relocated.

This has been going on for over three good weeks now and the concentration of the odorous unidentifiable gas is rising by the day. It used to engulf C18, 19 & 20 during the night and at peaks especially around 3am to 4am but yesterday Friday the 25th the pungent smell was present throughout the day. Evidence of worsening. It’s now an SOS situation. Akwaaba Oil Refinery operated by Chinese off the Tema Motorway on the right driving eastward has been identified as the source. EPA and relevant authorities must move in immediately before precious lives are lost.

We are truly being gassed to death.
The Akwaaba oil refinery sits right in front of my work place where I am the General Manager.
The gas we smell is a mixture of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide.
This refinery was constructed rapidly in 2016. My company contacted the EPA (Accra) repeatedly when it was being built but we were told the owner(s) of the company had connections at the Flagstaff house so couldn't be touched. I have made several reports to the EPA through their own staff to no avail. I invited two EPA officers to my office last two weeks for them to see the air pollution for themselves. They promised to report to their boss. I called them last week for feedback but they started giving excuses. I guess their boss told them to back off.
Unfortunately, this oil refinery not only pollutes the air we breath but pollutes a river nearby with oil sludge. This river is also used by a farmer across the motorway to water his vegetables which are sold at the Ashaiman market.

The gas pollution is emanating from methane Gass. It’s dangerous to our health.
Skin contact with liquefied methane can cause:
-Frostbite
-Skin and eye burns
Exposure to high levels of methane can cause:
-Suffocation
-Loss of consciousness
-Headache and dizziness
-Nausea and vomiting
-Weakness
-Loss of coordination
-Increased breathing rate
People are getting sick everyday. My little daughter has eye burns.
The company must be sued and have them pay $800 million to our community in damages.
