For the sake of our health and its effect on global warming we the undersigned ask that all open burning in the District of North Cowichan Municipality be banned, including all residential land, new developments, agricultural and forestry lands. This petition does not pertain to fireplaces, recreational firepits or campfires. Because we share the air I ask that you sign this petition and comment even if you do not live in North Cowichan. Remember that smoke has no boundaries, it travels. In a study of eight major Canadian cities, Health Canada found that approximately 5,900 deaths per year could be attributed to air pollution. Open burning is a significant source of airborne fine particulate matter and is putting toxins into the air. This petition will be submitted to Our Mayor and Council of North Cowichan Municipality the middle of November 2009.
The volume of support has reached a level that allows me to schedule a formal presentation with the municipal office. I am currently finalizing the summary report of our health concerns to be submitted alongside your names.

My kids cough all day when the neighbors decide to have a huge burn pile. Thanks for starting this.

Living in the valley is rough some days with the smoke settling in. Good luck.

Agreed. The air quality lately has been unacceptable for everyone.
