We lived in Austin and were stunned at the deep level of inherent racism throughout. As a small community all publicity is skewed toward making Austin sound like a progressive city - a welcoming city. This is only to keep the stakeholders of Hormel happy. Without the Hormel Foundation this town would implode. New immigrants and refugees are not accepted or loved - only used for the money making machine of the corporation. The deep divide of old Austin and the new Austin that is emerging has a Grand Canyon size gap in its population. The poor are held powerless with only glimpses of opportunity all while the narrative of the white elites and the money machine of Hormel keeps the train on the tracks. With so much at stake the slow simmering of overt racism is spoken softly by the Minnesota nice and ever felt by those rich in diversity who yearn for a more equitable world. The opportunity by the city - corporations - and schools is there but few have the nerve to take up the baton of real leadership because the cost is great.

It is the responsibility of the school to provide a safe environment for all children. The white privilege in this country and specifically this high school is appalling. Every single teacher, admin, coach, janitor, and security guard should be ashamed of themselves. They are complicit in the hate they are allowing in that school.

Austin high school: stop trying to present yourself as this great diverse happy school when you fail to represent your students of color properly. Students of color deserve to have their rights protected as their white counterparts and it’s up to YOU (staff, teachers, principal) to enforce it. Don’t turn a blind eye to them. They matter.

We came long way to make Austin Minnesota a Welcoming community and our work had being recognized everywhere. In a community that everyone feels is a Welcoming we should not allow such behavior and treatment to our students of color.
