Chancel Repair Liability (CRL) is a medevil law dating back to the reign of Henry VIII. After the desision to sell off church land / Glebe land, certain rights were not included. CRL is one of these. This liability states that the church can claim for any repairs to the chancel part of the building (Alter and surrounding area). This is acap-less cost that could be into 6 figure amounts.

The stories coming in reflect the genuine anxiety that this medieval law imposes on modern homeowners. I am currently compiling these experiences to present a more formal case against such an unpredictable financial burden. Silence from the authorities does not mean they are ignoring the gravity of the potential costs involved.

Reaching this milestone confirms that the burden of this outdated law is felt far more widely than I initially realized. It is heartening to see so many people recognize that these medieval obligations have no place in a modern property system. Thank you for bringing this issue into the light.

Archaic rule which defininitely needs to be abolished. Let the 'customers' pay and if there are not enough customers ........... well the solution is obvious!!!!!
This out dated law has no place in our society. The church has in its day been extremely wealthy but many people no longer feel the church serves them so many have found other ways to find God, This i feel is why certain churches are now turning to this old law the seats are empty their churches need repairing. easy really get the money from the people. the stress and hardship this will possibly cause will turn even more people from the church .peoples land becomes worthless over night some might even lose homes and all they have worked so hard to build up gone because of the church. How can that be right ? No one should lose their lively hood for any church or any religion. Davina Lewis.

This is abuse of an anachronistic and outdated 'right'. Any member of the church that thinks that it this is a morally right or proper thing to do should look very hard at their personal motivation. Conservation of historic buildings should not come at the price of arbitrarily picked individuals.
