I am opposed to the proposal for a block of 27 flats to be build on Thornton Road SW12 for the following reasons:
1. The road is already heavily populated with two large blocks of flats at either end of the road and present residents. (The current flats are set within larger plots with sufficient siting that they do not overlook properties inappropriately). It is ill considered to either assume there will be no increase in traffic and parking issues when the footfall of the two house plot is increased significantly.
2. Parking/Traffic - with two schools on the road and the sports centre at Agnes Riley and Henry Cavendish nearby, the road is already heavily congested and at times residents of the road are already blocked into their own driveways with parents parking over our property to drop children at school. The road is a 'rat run' for traffic on the south circular. The traffic and parking issue will only be increased by this development - the primary concern being the safety of children who live and go to school in the area.
3. For those of us who have applied for planning permission in the street, we know how stringent the council can be and understandably so. It seems odd that a large block of flats could even be considered. It clearly will alter the spirit and appearance of the street significantly, affect people's sunlight, privacy and experience on Thornton road. In particular when considering it looks over a school.

There are many points of objection to the proposed development at 22 & 22A Thornton Road all relating fundamentally to the proposed over-development of the site. The neighbourhood requirement is for affordable family housing. The proposal for 27 one and two bed flats is not suitable. Are any of these flats to be affordable?
The development is situated beside a Grade 2 listed building (housing The White House School). However the form, scale and location of the proposed building within the site completely dominates, concealing previous views of the school from the north along Thornton Road and changing the historic context of the school building.
It is not a realistic assumption that the development would be truly car free as public transport is not actually that close by with the exception of a few bus routes. 27 new flats would bring a large number of additional cars to the area. Thornton Road has a fluctuating car requirement which varies by time of day and day of the week to suit the community needs of 2 local primary schools and a church. At times the road can appear empty with many available parking spaces however at peak times this is not the case. Additional residents parking will cause congestion and potentially unsafe road conditions which is of particular concern for the local school children.
To maximise the number of flats the proposed development has both lower and upper ground floors with the access via an external stair and lift at the upper ground floor level. Reliance on an external lift for access (e.g. for wheelchair users or pushchairs) is not ideal as there is no contingency for access for all when it the lift is out of use (for repair or maintenance).
Overlooking of the adjacent school building and playground has not been addressed in the design with 8 flats having a direct view.
There are a number of blocks of flats along Thornton Road, mainly 1960s ex-local authority, however these blocks are set within far larger plots with

I strongly disagree with this new development going ahead. It will increase traffic on a road that has a number of primary and kindergarten schools on it. It will stand out from the rest of the road which is full of quaint, beautiful houses. To build a development of such a scale would be to ruin the culture of Thornton Road. I am strongly opposed.

i strongly disagree with the proposed development for several reasons. The increase in traffic, this is already a concern as vehicles use it as a cut through and at time speed down this normally quite road. The planned development is grossly over developed. Parking is a great concern, as isnt reflected in the plans the impact this would cause to residents. plus many more objections.

I strongly object to this planned development due to my concerns about the safety of children attending the two primary schools on the road (St Bedes and the Whitehouse), plus other local schools such as Henry Cavendish. Many children also use the road to walk to the hugely popular Agnes Riley park. In addition it is neither in keeping with the area, and would affect views of the Grade II listed building. Finally congestion and parking difficulties are already an issue.
