  • We are trying to raise awareness to one of the most prominent housing issues in the City of Lowell Massachusetts: affordable housing. In Massachusetts, there is a zoning law coming into effect [specific times] that will impact all communities with an MBTA station. For this law, the MBTA is requiring 50 continuous acres within half a mile of downtown or from the nearest MBTA Transit station to be filled with multi-family and affordable housing. As a city with extensive workplace diversity, this law would be extremely beneficial. If the requirements for this law are not met, there will be consequences [for who] from the state. They would withhold large amounts of state funding, which would seriously impact Lowell as a whole. We are a city that is densely populated and cannot have a continuous amount of land that is used for affordable housing, meaning that we cannot fit the requirements of the MBTA law. Some things in Lowell can't be changed. Sign below if you would like to support this cause. Despite Lowell not meeting the requirements we still need this housing and funding for our city. We ask the state for an exemption to allow the city of Lowell to be able to spread out these 50 acres of land throughout the city.
