Many people are struggling to afford a safe and stable place to live. Rent and home prices continue to rise, but many people’s incomes have not increased enough to keep up. As a result, families, students, seniors, and working people may be forced to spend most of their income on housing, move away from their communities, live in crowded homes, or experience homelessness.

Private construction companies and real estate developers have the ability to help address this problem. Instead of building only expensive apartments and luxury homes, companies should include more affordable housing in their new projects.

We are asking private housing developers to:

• Build more affordable homes and apartments.
• Include affordable units in new housing developments.
• Work with local governments and community organizations.
• Consider the needs of working families, students, seniors, and lower-income residents.
• Keep affordable units reasonably priced for future residents.

Affordable housing can reduce financial stress, help prevent homelessness, and allow people to live closer to their jobs, schools, friends, and families. Private companies can still earn a profit while also supporting the communities where they build.
