My husband is dyslexic and cannot read above an elementary level. My 8 year old daughter is also dyslexic and cannot read at all, even after being in special education for over 2 years! Things need to change. I cannot get cooperation from the school. They do not want to recognize dyslexia as a specific problem. Its time to get some help!!

I am a mother of a dyslexic child. I had the mother hunch that my child was dyslexic when she was in Kindergarten. I was unaware at that time that the schools do not have any resources to assist children with this disability. My daughter is now in 4th grade and seriously behind in school. She is now making good progress using a private tutor and working with the Barton Reading and Spelling system. I find it really upsetting that the schools can accommodate for numerous other disabilities and yet they don't make accommodations for this one. More needs to be done to keep these kids from falling further and further behind. All schools should had a specialist that is able to test for and diagnose dyslexia, as well as provide help to ensure the success of dyslexic students.

As the mother of a child w/dyslexia, I was very disappointed and stunned at the lack of understanding my son's school displayed. I had to educate the teacher and principal on what dyslexia was. It's not just "seeing things backwards". More needs to be done and fast to keep our children from falling through the cracks. You shouldn't have to raise hell with the North Kansas City School District just to get something done.

I am a teacher and had students in my classroom with Dyslexic. They need to have help in the class just like everyone else -PL 94-142. They need to have programs to be least restrictive as other children that have a disability. Yes this is a major disability to them.

My son has dyslexia ! We have fought for years to get him help! We took him to TN for three years to a center that helped him! Missouri schools will not help him and are insurance plan will not help with his therapy cost because he can not take a pill to fix him like you can with other learning disabilities . These kids need help ! Every teacher should be educated to know the signs and how to teach these special children !

My daughter was recently diagnosed Dyslexic a month ago and I'm ready to start implementing Ortan Gillingham systems in our schools and educating our teachers and staff on this misunderstood condition! These children are our future so let's stand up and be their voice!

I feel like I'm fighting a battle against the school, teachers, family and friends who don't understand why Missouri law needs to change! I'm a dyslexic mother to a kindergarten son who is also dyslexic. I can't give up fighting for my sons right to learn, be taught or just looked at like he's a child in need of resources and not a problem the schools don't want to deal with! I will NEVER give up on him, NEVER, like so many teachers, family members and society gave up on me when I was growing up. Missouri schools have to provide resources, specialist, testing, education for our teachers and staff, tutoring programs etc. for our children to have equal opportunity learning!

Dyslexia needs recognition and funding so that teachers and schools can be educated and trained appropriately to accommodate and educate dyslexic students in the classroom. Dyslexia affects 20% of the population. That means that 20% of our students are not being educated on an even playing field in the public education system and possibly not reaching their full potential.

I have a dyslexic daughter who receives no assistance from the school district. They told me it's a medical problem so I took her to Children's Mercy. All they were able to do was tell me what the problem is. I cannot understand how we ended up with a system for "normal" children and then educate only disabled children who are lucky enough to be included for funding. If my child had Down's Syndrome or Autism or Cerebral Palsy they would get services. What's wrong with this picture?

We need public schools to have teachers trained to address Dyslexia. My son's special Ed teacher said she knows nothing about Dyslexia. He is not getting the help he needs to learn in school.

My daughter has dyslexia. The school couldn't help. We paid out of pocket to get the help. What about those who can't afford it? Dyslexic students are too bright to be sidelined.
