Nearly 100 free-roaming animals were killed or injured in the New Forest last year.
A quarter of these – 25 animals - were killed or injured on just four key routes in the evenings in the two months after the clocks go back. About three quarters of the accidents involved local drivers.
You will be helping New Forest commoners, the families who own the animals that maintain the Forest, to raise awareness of the issue and reduce accidents this winter.
The owners allow their animals to graze the area in order to keep it the special place that we all enjoy. Without their commitment we’d lose the Forest we all love, but road casualties make it harder for them to continue.
The #add3minutes campaign is run by a partnership of the Commoners Defence Association, Shared Forest Business Group, New Forest Verderers, New Forest National Park Authority, Forestry Commission, Hampshire Police, Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council.

I live in lyndhurst and work in Southampton therefore fully aware of the animals and drive accordingly. I am signing this to make visitors to the New Forest also aware and more caution for the through traffic.
I fully support this - I'm a regular visitor to the New Forest and have personally seen some thoughtless driving near animals - it seems to be the locals who tailgate you whilst you keep to the 40 mph limit and overtake you at speed at the first opportunity.
Living in Hythe I take the long routes home when it’s dark and avoid the areas where ponies roam free. If I have to go in pony areas in the dark I drive 30 miles an hour or less, 40 is too fast. Pony deaths are not acceptable speed cameras should be installed in high risk areas.
I traveled from Lymington to Fawley Refinery for 30 years without an incident. One tip I could suggest is to look to the sides of cars approaching in darkness for animal standing on the verge. It worked for me!
It is heartbreakingly sad and stays in my memory for so long when I witness seeing a dead pony on the side of the road with it bloated body and that sticker attached to it. My greatest I wish is to never have to see it again
Terrible numbers of animal suffering. There must be unreported injuries too. Who pays to clear up after the dead and dying creatures?
Please go extra slow when animals are by the side of the road.

Definitely need signage to remind drivers of the danger of night driving in the forest .....we’ve often come across ponies just standing in the middle of the road at night, particularly on the road to Burley from the A35.
