This petition is issued to support the addition of shoulders to River Road. (from Zorn Avenue to Wolf Pen Branch) This will greatly improve safety for motorists, cyclists, joggers and walkers. We are fortunate to have a designated "Scenic Byway" and need to enhance River Road's safety for all to enjoy.

Citizens for a Safer River Road is a group of concerned citizens who will soon be starting the process to raise $1.95M (through private donations) to add shoulders to River Road. We are NOT soliciting from individuals yet though--, just speaking with Foundations at this time.

The lanes on River Road vary between approximately 10-12 feet in width with a narrow shoulder in some locations. Our plan is to narrow the lanes to a consistent width throughout the corridor and widen River Road so we can have a 48-inch shoulder on each side through much of the corridor. Below is a link to the map of the plan that was developed by Gresham, Smith & Partners for this project. Along this 5.5 mile stretch, there are 3 areas that have a more narrow shoulder (shown in yellow on the map). The yellow areas depict where a shoulder is greater than 36 inches, but is less than 48 inches. There is 1 area (shown in red) where shoulder widening cannot occur near the Harrods Creek Bridge.

Note: This plan is not perfect---, but it is a whole lot better than what we have now!!

This effort is fiscally sponsored by the Community Foundation of Louisville (CFL). All donations will be made to the Community Foundation of Louisville. When our fundraising goal is met, the funds will be transferred to Louisville Metro who will contract the work and manage the project.

Metro Council approval is required for Metro to "accept" the funds. Thus, in the next 2 months, Councilwoman Angela Leet and Councilman Bill Hollander will be co-sponsoring a Council resolution to allow Metro to accept this funding once raised. We owe them a great deal of gratitude!!

Gresham, Smith & Partners will be conducting two (2) public meetings to inform residents of the proposed project and hear comments and concerns. The dates are Thursday, March 2nd and Tuesday, March 14th at the Louisville Water Tower. (from 5 to 7) Please try and attend either meeting or both to show your support!!

The purpose of this Petition is to show the Metro Council Members (as well as prospective donors and others) the incredible support that exists for this project!!

Thank you for your support!!

River Road is a lovely part of Louisville. I NEVER ride my bike on upper river road as it is too dangerous. I would LOVE to have a bike connection such that I can bike down river road, have a bite at one of several restaurants and bike home. Please make River Road safer for non-motorized traffic.

This is an investment that will pay dividends for many generations to come. Public/Private partnerships is an excellent way to help fund a public need.

I commute to work from OC to UofL early morning and would love a wider shoulder or bike path to ensure that I do in fact make it home.

River Road needs a safer space for pedestrians and cyclists to travel! That road is scary in some places! I have a friend who narrowly escaped death on River road, minding his own business riding a bike.

I have been cycling along River Road since 1976 and live two minutes off the road in Rivers Edge. Even as a veteran cyclist, riding on this scenic byway can be daunting, given increased traffic flows and occasional driver aggression. I support a safer way to share the road. Jim Moyer Rivers Edge

This change may help calm traffic on river road. Speeding is common as area residents employ River Road as a faster alternative to I-71. Enforcement of the posted speed limit would also be helpful.

This is a move in the right direction to allow for the safe sharing of Louisville's beautiful river byway.
