The Brooklyn Elementary School kindergarten classes for the upcoming 2015 - 2016 school year are unacceptably large. In a memo sent to teaching staff on July 10, 2015 the number of students registered for kindergarten was erroneous. The memo lists 70 kindergarten students whereas the correct information should read 87 students with 2 others awaiting registration. With 4 kindergarten teachers this makes the kindergarten classes contain 21 or 22 students. This is not in line with other local schools whose kindergarten classes range from 14 to 18 students.(see details below **) This same situation occurred in 2012 when the kindergarten classes were too large and in October an additional teacher was hired and students were removed from their classroom and put into a new class. This was very disruptive for all concerned. In order to prevent the same thing from happening this year, we are asking that the Board of Education immediately add a kindergarten teacher to bring the classes to a reasonable number of students.
