D.) This rule was enforced because of security. The fear is that students could bring guns in their backpacks to school. But this makes absolutely no sense. First of all, a gun could easily be hidden in any kind of bag, not just backpacks. Second, guns could be hidden lots of other places, like under someone's clothes. And finally, if someone decided that they were going to bring a gun into the school and use it to harm others, the size of their backpack isn't going to affect their decision. If you think that someone would not bring a gun to school just because it wouldn't fit in their bag, you're wrong. We don't need a backpack ban, we need increased security at the doors in the morning. In general, the new backpack ban is a huge inconvenience for the motivated students at West because it limits the amount of needed supplies that we can have with us. At the same time, it does not even phase those students on a different level, who don't care about whether they have the supplies they need, or whether they pass. This is just another event at West and in the Davenport Community School District that honestly makes me believe that many of the administrators do NOT care about what's best for the students. They only care about money, and pointless rules that they didn't even consider all the perspectives of, and they have absolutely no empathy or consideration for anything that the students or parents have to say about any of it. Hopefully this will be the time when someone finally hears us.

C.) This rule change was never officially announced to students or parents until the first day of school. It was posted on the school website one week before school started (AFTER most people bought their school supplies), but most people have no reason to check the school's page over the summer.

B.) With the weight of all the school supplies that SHOULD be in a full sized backpack, squeezed into a small bag with very thin straps, a drawstring "backpack" painfully digs into the students' shoulders. I would know - today was the first day following the new backpack rule, and I got a migraine. These bags can cause pain, back problems, and terrible headaches.

A.) Drawstring backpacks are NOT built for notebooks, textbooks, and books. They are built to hold athletic clothes and a few small items that one would take to the gym or somewhere similar. These bags cannot hold all the necessary supplies, and will wear out from being over-capacity. Do the administrators honestly think that I maintained a 4.0 GPA for 3 years by only carrying the supplies that will fit in a drawstring backpack? I don't think so.

What with a 4 minute passing time, I don't have time to go to my locker, and those tiny, fragile string backpacks just don't do it.

This ban is a bad idea because of what it causes. Stuff like this is what draws attention to yourselves and makes people hate you. With only a 4 minute passing time and classes so far apart we can't use tiny little things for our text books and notebooks for the classes and still make it on time. let us use our regular back packs again it's what they are made for. Another thing is that so many already got a book bag and maybe it was expensive they can't just get their money back for it then it'll just be a waste because they'll have to go in and buy an entire new one.

Always enforcing rules that are absolutely absurd. Why don't you worry less about the students who need their backpacks so they are prepared to learn because they care about their education & worry more about those whom it is not necessary to have one since they don't make an effort to do their school work or even go to class? If you actually want students to get to class on time with the proper materials, I highly suggest you let them carry a backpack.

You are not preparing students for real life in college. Everyone has a backpack in order to carry their necessary materials to different classes. You are backtracking them to elementary days, where they only have one general class and do not need to carry different materials. This is an inconvenience and I find it absolutely ridiculous and stupid. I made it all through high school carrying a backpack around and it was my life saver, because even with the backpack, I STILL had to carry a few of my textbooks and didn't have enough room in my bag. Teach these young adults responsibility of their own things.

Something has to give. If you take away backpacks fine so give the students enough time to go to their locker to get the materials they need. As for violence, a student will not change his plans just because he can't bring his gun in his backpack he will bring it no matter what.

As a West high school graduate who was allowed 7 minutes of passing time I know how difficult it is to stop at your locker get a drink and go to the restroom. Drop the ban.
