As a parent of a high school senior, I am appalled by the sheer lack of thought, reason, and common sense that went into the "ban on backpacks" this year at west high school. Equally as infuriating is the "no outside food or drink" rule. Clearly the person/persons who implemented these rules, principal, teachers, et must be aware of the mountains of books these kids must carry everyday, not to mention binders and notebooks.

It is practically impossible to get to class on time and go to your locker in between classes to get stuff out for your next class without being late. String backpacks are terrible for you back even chiropractors say so. The 4 minute passing makes everything even more complicated.

Wake up! These kids need their backpacks. Those string bags are not designed for heavy books. The strings will cut painfully into shoulders and do not give the students proper back support.

As a former West student and current parent of a student I know how big this school is and 4 mins to get to class might be achievable if they have their backpack to hold what they need! I carried a backpack and my daughters should be able to as well!!

Let the kids use backpacks it seems inhumane to make them carry everything around and run to their lockers constantly when they could just use a backpack.

My sister goes there and I graduated from west two years ago and we never had an issue with any of this. I thinks it's outrageous and should be changed. You expect so much from students. You don't realize that some of these people can't handle what you're doing. I believe it should be changed immediately

My daughter does not have time to go to her locker so she brings all her books with her all day long and this cannot be done with a string backpack

The string backpacks do NOT offer much support and is hard on the kids' backs. You want the kids to go to their locker more often this way? Then make passing time longer for the kids. If they need to use the bathroom AND go to their lockers then get to class across the school then the chances of them being late increases. These"kids" are soon to be adults. They ARE NOT hr high kids. Treat them accordingly

I think this should be banned because 1 text book doesnt even fit in a drawstring backpack! No one wants to carry their thing around!

My children went to west high & from what i learned is the adults at that school only care about them selves they don't care about the children or teaching them to learn , Most schools are like this , just get through the year , pass every child ( whether they should or should not be passed ) No caring or compassion any more !! So Very Sad !!

If the school would install metal detectors like done at other schools they wouldn't have to worry about the gun issue. They don't need a backpack to store guns and or other illegal items. You are hurting and discouraging children and they are more worried about being late and getting a detention which takes away from what they are to do in the classroom which I thought was to learn.
