Students can't carry backpacks? That sounds really rediculous to me. It has been almost 20 yrs since I was at West but it was very difficult to get from the choir to a class upstairs without making a stop at my locker. It is true that if kids want to carry weapons/drugs, they will find a way to carry them no matter what items are taken from them - if that is indeed the reason they are unable to carry them. (Maybe the administrators are worried about how many books students pack in their backpacks and are attempting to promote better posture-afterall, not many books can be carried in a cinch sack).
Allow the kids carry their backpacks for crying out loud. What's next? Only wind breakers are allowed to be worn even when it's 20 below. This way weapons and drugs will not be hidden in coats. What about pants? Those should be banned too. We don't want those little sneaky rascals to hiding weapons or drugs in their pants. Only shirts and kilts should be allowed. (Seriously?)

How are we supposed to carry everything that we need in a tiny bag that barely holds a 2 inch binder? We need a backpack, not a lot of people will be late and don't have to go to their locker as much.

I don't know how they expect to take away backpacks and cut the passing time and then get to class on time. This rule needs to be changed.

This is pretty dumb. Punishing the student body because of a few bad eggs is just going to piss everyone off and they'll rebel. I have no idea why anyone thought it would be a good idea to reduce passing time to 4 minutes. It was 7 minutes when I went to West. My locker wasn't near any of my classes, so if I had to store something, it was at least feasible that I could get to my locker. With 4 minutes, and not being able to wear backpacks, this seems like a nearly impossible task. I'm fairly certain I can make it to another building on campus faster than I could make it to my locker and back to class at West. Not to mention that if a student needs to use the restroom, most teachers tell them to do it during passing. Good luck peeing, visiting your locker, and getting to class in 4 minutes.

This is ridiculous. How are we suppose to stop at our lockers then make it to class on time? Just because other students mess up doesn't mean you have to punish the whole student body. Stopping at our lockers, trying to navigate through hallways full of people, and making it too class is impossible. This whole backpack ban should dismissed.

By the way, my mother is NOT going to put up with me getting detentions for being late for my classes through no fault of my own. I already can't make it from the choir room to the second floor in 4 minutes, and I don't even stop at my locker. Later in the year, I will be taking Intermediate Spanish 1, Intermediate Spanish 2, and AP Spanish, which I will need to have textbooks, workbooks, notecards, and other extra materials for. The ONLY possible way for me to be on time for my classes is to carry my backpack. Even then, we don't have enough time. What needs to happen is for students to be allowed to have regular backpacks again, like we have been allowed my past 3 years of high school, and for students to have AT LEAST 6 minutes (again, like the past 2 years (we had 7 minutes freshmen year)) for passing time. The administration is showing a lack of respect and concern for all students at West High School. I always used to love school, and because of that, I maintained a 4.0 GPA for 3 years. Now because of all these new rules, along with some other changes in the district/school, I woke up this morning DREADING having to go to school - for today, AND for the rest of the year. I feel looked down upon by most of the administrators (except teachers), and I cannot wait to get out of West High School.

To add to this, band AND choir students are on the very end of the building, far away from all of the other classrooms. And if anyone thinks "well it's only a couple classes of students, they'll just have to deal with it," no, that's not the case. There are about 200 choir students, I believe, and probably even more band students. There's simply not enough time to stop ANYWHERE. I still haven't been able to get to my next class in 4 minutes, even when carrying all my things with me. This is not going to work.

Exactly what I've been saying! I think they should put metal detectors outside the two main entrances (front and music hall) and lock all the other doors in the morning. It's actually that simple.

The students have been told it is a district wide rule. That is false and it is solely the inclinations of a principle who clearly feels the need to micro manage and treat high schoolers like they are back in elementary school. How can we expect high schoolers to make responsible and grown up decisions if we don't treat them like adults, and instead treat them all like juvenile delinquents???!
