When I went to west we were allowed to take backpacks to class and it was so much more helpful so we wouldn't have to continuously go to our locker especially if our locker was far from the next class we had and now that the passing period is shortened it could cause students to be late for class trying to get all the way from their current class to their locker and then to the their next class. I hope that for the sake of the students at west this petition will get to 1000 so they wont have to be late for class

I second this! The weight of 20 lbs. worth of school supplies all digging into our shoulders through two thin little strings is going to cause SEVERE nerve and tissue damage, along with bad posture and spinal problems. Also, isn't high school supposed to prepare us for adult life? So why are they still treating us like children? Each individual student needs to be treated as an adult unless they give them a reason not to. We have the right to have our opinions heard and respected.

At first I almost thought that MY mom posted this! This is exactly the situation I'm in. I am now a senior with nearly a 4.0 GPA. I have always loved school. But this year, with only two days done so far, I already strongly dislike school. Luckily I understand that this is only one year of my life, then I'll be moved on to bigger and better things. However, there are lots of students out there who would become very discouraged by all of this and lose their drive to succeed in school. I can't believe that the new principal thinks that she's going to get on our good side by going on an immediate power trip by making pointless rules that only make our lives harder.

String back packs are considered a health issue. Let me explain. Sounds weird that a STRING BACKPCK can CAUSE HEALTH ISSUES, but the weight of what you're putting into your bag, makes the stings pull down because your bag was not made to carry that. IT RUINS THE NERVES IN YOUR SHOULDERS CAUSE YOU TO HAVE NERVE DAMAGE AND ISSUES WHEN YOU GET OLDER. also string back packs were made to carry clothing for athletes. Not for school supplies. I suggest the school rethinks there decision cause sooner or later we are all going to quit listening. We have opinions that need to be heard. It's a free country. Freedom of speech. West high school is the only school in the davenport district doing this because others have tried and failed .

I have enough troubles as it is, trying to remember where my locker is and classes. Especially when they are all the way across the school. I would love to be able to carry my backpack around so I know I have everything.

My daughter is an A student excited to get back to school. 1. She's now forced to wait 20 minutes outside after getting of the bus (time she uses to go to her locker on the top floor. 2. Only 4 minutes between classes (she struggled to make time in 5 minutes) 3. so now she can't carry her books from class to class in a backpack in order to make class on time... (even taking a minute of their run time. .. oh wait, they can't run either). Talk about hating school. Nothing like walking in to be restricted, restricted and unconvinced. My daughter does not need her record tarnished for this kind of bs!

I can say, without a doubt, that not being able to carry around our backpacks in school is very inconvenient. Having to rush to our lockers every block can be tedious, and some of us have items that can't fit inside of a String Backpack.

I don't think you should have to put your bag in your locker! You should be able yo carry it around since theirs only 4 minutes it for passing.

No "drawstring bag" will with hold the weight of the text books kids carry. Especially long periods of time. They'll have to buy several within a year!

If the school is that worried about concealed items they could say clear backpacks like they use at the race tracks.

We aren't elementary or middle school students like our new principle USED to teach. We are high schoolers, young adults, and we have harder classes that acquire us to carry text books and a lot of supplies. How do you expect the freshman and sophomores who have almost al core classes to fit 3 or 4 textbooks into a little draw string bag that can barely fit 1 2-Ring binder? Are you kidding me? This needs to be changed. I don't care how many times I get yelled at, I will continue to use a backpack.
