The Metro Planning Commission finally backed down and scrapped the plan for that parking lot. We stopped them from turning our school grounds into a cash cow for city bars. Keep your eyes open because we know they might try to sneak this by us again.

Final supporters
The Metro Planning Commission has proposed building a public pay parking lot at the Waverly Belmont Elementary school. Many neighbors and prospective WBE parents are opposed to this proposal for the following reasons:
1.This plan will threaten the safety and security of children attending Waverly-Belmont Elementary by opening the campus to the public during the school day.
2.This plan inappropriately calls for commercial establishments that cater to a late-night bar crowd to share a parking lot with a K-4 elementary school.
3.This plan will eliminate green space that should be used by the students for physical activity by overbuilding the parking lot beyond the school’s needs.
4.This plan will promote unchecked development along 12th Avenue, encouraging more large, auto-centric destination restaurants and bars instead of smaller, neighborhood-friendly establishments.
5.This plan will increase traffic around the school 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
6.This plan will bring more congestion onto our residential streets while doing nothing to alleviate the problem of commercial parking along residential streets.
7.This plan will create noise and light pollution to surrounding residential properties.
8.Metro public funds will be used to build this parking lot, and we believe this to be an inappropriate use of public resources to benefit a few private business operations along 12th Avenue South.

The Metro Planning Commission continues to ignore our concerns while they prioritize bar patrons over our children. I am currently hounding every official who thinks it is acceptable to convert school property into a commercial parking trap.

The Metro Planning Commission continues to ignore the safety of our children but this massive surge in support proves they cannot sweep our opposition under the rug anymore. We are forcing them to acknowledge that our neighborhood is not a dumping ground for their reckless commercial growth.

No thanks to this. Restaurants and bars shouldn't share parking space with an elementary school. Not even sure why this is being considered.
Metro public funds will be used to build this parking lot, and I believe this to be an inappropriate use of public resources to benefit a few private businesses along 12th Avenue South.
WB Elementary School is an 80-yr-old civic treasure. Adding 77 parking spaces for happy-hour to 3am tavern traffic will denigrate the school's play and open space, endanger children, and disrupt residential life on Caruthers and surrounding streets. This project involves public subsidy for private profit and neighborhood deterioration.
I'm all for progress, but adding a pay parking lot is not going to alleviate the parking situation. We already have one on 12th and people don't use it. Taking away green space to lay more concrete is not the answer
an unnecessarily large parking lot is not in the best interest for the neighbors nor WBE. The residents of Caruthers already endure the throngs of cars and noise. I have lived on S. Douglas Ave., just down the road from this newly proposed school, for the past 11 years. I am completely opposed to a paid parking lot on the school grounds. I hope one day to send my children to the school and it would be a shame to see A parking lot take the place of free space for the community.
