We, the undersigned residents of Washington County, in recognition of the value and many benefits that trees provide, urge our County Commissioners to initiate a countywide urban forestry program to offset the negative impact of increasing housing development on tree canopy and the localized impact of climate change.
Action petitioned for:
- Budget for a dedicated professional urban forester/planner for the county to develop an urban forestry plan to provide better protection for trees and better clarity for developers for the future.
- The urban forester will develop a plan with various county departments and community groups, including environmental justice organizations and will work with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Program staff to help secure supplemental grant funding from local, state and regional sources.
- Include adequate space for new trees and protect existing trees in plans for new housing developments, especially in the urban unincorporated areas of the county.

Advocate to protect Cooper Mt, expansion of Cooper Mountain Nature Park, protect trees, wildlife and natural resources in development areas of South Cooper Mountain. Currently own 2 properties on North & South Cooper Mt.
It is essential for fish, wildlife and humans that we protect our tree canopy. Trees cool city streets and homes in a warming climate, filter stormwater and air pollutants, and sequester carbon. Our county needs a comprehensive urban forestry program to protect our natural resources and guide smart development.
I was born and raised in Washington County, and have seen the rampant unchecked destruction of tree canopy by housing developers. At this pace, our precious neighborhoods will be paved and barren within the decade. It is simply unsustainable.
With recent wind storms and the impact of housing developments on old tree root systems we are seeing more and more failed and fallen trees in our communities. We need to consider how development can damage our trees and work towards protecting them
Several of us in our Garden Home neighborhood have Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District urban conservation projects on our properties. At the same time, conflicting public policy means multiple cedars, firs, and other mature trees have been removed from nearby properties. Washington County needs an urban forestry program!
May GOD-ALMIGHTY save the beloved trees of this world.

I was alarmed too read that some proposed regulations would allow for removal of trees to speed affordable housing development, making it hard to protect our wetland areas. I am all for affordable housing, but we can figure out how to do this responsibly while protecting nature; both being quality of life issues.
