Honorable Yellowstone County Comissioners: John Ostlund, Robyn Driscoll, and Denis Pitman:

As Yellowstone County residents of Billings West End, we respectfully request that traffic control at the 48th/Central intersection be changed to four-way stop.

On the afternoon of May 3, 2018, the subject intersection saw yet another collision, preceded by another one just the week before and many, many others over recent months and years.

The intersection is particularly challenging because of several power poles that obstruct a south-bound driver’s east and west lines of sight. Further, continued development in the area is only going to increase the volume of traffic through the intersection.

The cost of the change is likely only a few thousand dollars. Our kids’ lives are worth far more than that amount. Please do not wait for a fatality.

Change the traffic control to a four-way stop as soon as practical.

Sincerely,

Updates

I was watching the traffic move through 48th and Central again this morning and honestly it is just terrifying how fast cars bank around that corner without a second thought. I have been putting together a packet of the accident reports and all your notes about near misses because the commissioners really need to see that this is not just some hypothetical problem but a daily hazard for everyone who lives here.

I honestly cannot believe how fast this is growing, it is just wild to see so many people who actually care about that death trap on 48th and Central. Seriously, just thinking about those power poles blocking the view makes me so anxious every time I drive back home, but now that we have this much momentum maybe the commissioners will actually have to pay attention for once.

Excessive blind spots if you are headed south on 48th at this intersection due to all of the power poles. Extremely dangerous...

It takes so little to erect a four way stop sign compared to cleaning up a fatal wreck and destroyed lives. Please act NOW rather than later!

Central is frequently used as a drag strip because it’s straight and has no stop signs. Plus, people who don’t frequent the intersection get confused by it only being a two way stop. There’s a very serious multi vehicle accident there at least once a year.

Even though I live in the city rather than county, this intersection is very dangerous! I believe more could be done to make this safe.

I couldn’t agree more. It won’t be long and my kids will be driving. I live near this intersection.

This is a dangerous intersection. I missed a collision by 2 feet when someone was driving on Central at a fast speed and did not see me crossing on 48th street. This needs to be a 4-way stop!

I believe all the intersections out here should be a 4-way stop. Including Hesper. 48th and 56th.
