William Grant Stairs was a Canadian who beheaded an African king to take possession of province in the Congo. Henry Morton Stanley was an American imperialist who killed Africans indiscriminately while claiming to save them. In past centuries, these men were celebrated as great explorers, but they have since been exposed as sadistic conquerors. It is time to stop commemorating them in Canada. Sign this petition to change the names of Stanley, Stairs, Columbus and the other streets named after colonizers in the Hydrostone neighborhood of north end Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The momentum behind this renaming effort is clear proof that our neighborhood is ready to move past the legacy of colonial violence. It's deeply regrettable, but sadly not surprising, that we have streets named after brutal mercenaries whose "greatest" achievement was the racist killing and subjugation of sovereign nations. Thank you for helping to fix that.
I used to live on Stairs St. and I first heard of this story via El Jones. Thank you for bringing this forward.
I live in an apartment on Columbus St. and I cringe every time I have to tell my street name to anyone. I would be more than happy to see the name changed.
It’s important to know our history and important to learn from it. Stairs and Stanley were butchers, not heroes. To continue to have streets named after them is a stain on our city.
I own a home in the area - all 3 streets should be renamed. It's unconscionable that Stairs be memorialized this way.
