The time has come for the Town of Somers to stop discriminating against our female athletes! This is a petition calling on the Somers Town Board and The Somers Parks and Recreation Board To remedy this inequity.
We, The Residents of Somers, hereby request that the Town of Somers configure the existing ball field at Van Tassel Park as a regulation girls softball field, including 60' bases, a 200' fence and an infield skin extending out on a 60' radius from a 43' pitching plate, for use as the primary softball field and for use as needed by the boys baseball program, commencing with the Spring 2016 season.

I just looked at the screen and saw we hit two hundred and fifty signatures which honestly makes my head spin a bit. It feels like this is actually gaining real momentum now because people are finally starting to see why these fields need to change for our girls.

I was just looking at the count and we are pushing right up against that next benchmark which is honestly wild because it feels like just yesterday I was typing this up in my kitchen with a total mess of coffee cups everywhere. We need a massive surge right this second to cross that line before I talk to the board members because if they see that number spiking they might actually realize we are not just going to go away quietly. Can you blast this out on every single app you have on your phone right now while I try to find where I put my car keys again.

If you know anyone who hasn't seen this yet just send them the link right now because those local officials really need to see a big group of us showing up at once if we want them to actually change those base paths before the spring.

I graduated in 1993 and played Softball for Somers HS my sophomore through senior year and we requested a fence back then. I think it's about time a fence is put up!
Girls Softball needs a dedicated field with proper dimensions and lights. Weeknight games always get cut off due to darkness, while boys and men continue under lights. Anything less doesn't solve the problem.
What a shock ! Raining, football practice comes inside & Volleyball loses its scheduled time slot & told to wait. Girls Varsity Soccer or Lax has game & boys f/ball or lax have practice you know who gets turf field . 15 years experience has always been girls are 1 rung lower.
My daughter is just beginning her softball experience in Somers and it has been so confusing not knowing where we are playing week to week and not actually playing on a feild but just in the grass.
I've gone through the program for 12 years now and I can honestly say that softball has shaped me into the young lady I am. It is embarassing that the year is 2015 and the girls dont have ONE regulation designated field with the right dimensions meanwhile the boys have several. The town of Somers should be ashamed of themselves.
Unbelievable, you should contact channel 12 news and have them bring some attention to this injustice
This is the year 2015 - time for female atheletes to be taken seriously and for these girls to have their own field

As the former head of the SYSO Softball Program, and the Somers High School Varsity Softball coach for 15 years, I believe it's about time the girls got their own field. It is something I've been in favor of for many years. Softball should have had its own field a long time ago.
