Whatever stance a UMC affiliated school may take on the "sinfulness" of homosexuality - we must remember that the BOD also directs us to fight against discrimination in all its forms, and that all individuals are of sacred worth. This policy must end.

in 1987, I had to lie about who I was in order to graduate. I was told by my class sponsor that I would never get a teaching job in the state if he could prove that I was gay. This discrimination needs to stop now.

I understand Asbury's principles on human sexuality are based on scripture; which isn't the issue. It's when those principles promote discrimination that it becomes an issue of grave importance.
Asbury's "Statement on Human Sexuality" states "same-sex practice" is not about the orientation. So, as long as an LGBT student refrains from same=sex practices, they can be open about their sexual orientation. But what is the message Asbury is sending to its LGBT students by its attempt to raise enough money so they do not have to sign an anti-discrimination pact?
Does Asbury really want to be known as the Christian (with the emphasis of being "Christ like") university that promotes discrimination?

As an Asbury Alum and LBGT Ally (straight guy who supports Sex/Gender Civil Rights), I am strongly in favor of Asbury University changing its official stance on the condemnation of Homosexuality. I have seen first hand that damage that has been done by my institution to my LBGT friends. Much of this is attitudinal discrimination, which is unjust and creates a climate of belligerent hostility. It is very similar to the racist attitudes of the 60's, though more physically benign - that is: very few acts of overt violence. Though, I have heard horribly dehumanizing and biologically inaccurate critiques slanders tossed around like candy at a parade. It is time for Asbury to reject its anti-homosexual stance and become entirely indifferent to it, in the same way that they are indifferent to gender, race, and denomination. It is time to allow and facilitate equality for all classes and demographics.
