Asbury University has a long history of LGBT discrimination, which has not been uncommon for an evangelical Christian institution. Not until recently, that is. More and more colleges and universities similar to Asbury have started reexamining their policies and developing more progressive stances on the acceptance of openly LGBT students and staff.

Asbury has taken the opposite tack of late; going so far as to ask alumni during the Alumni Weekend (which happened to coincide with the Supreme Court decision) to raise an endowment of 100 million dollars in order to circumvent the need for federal funding and continue their practice of discrimination.

You can read about it here (their own publication, sent to alumni.)

Scroll down to "Presidential perspectives"

Or listen to it here: https://www.asbury.edu/125

Clearly, Asbury is out of-step with not only the times but with many students and alumni. We are asking you to sign this petition to make them aware of that fact, and change their discriminatory policies.

Updates

August 26, 2015

I am currently compiling a list of these signatures to deliver directly to the board of trustees. Please email your local representative today to demand they look into the funding practices at this institution. We need to stay focused on these discriminatory endowment plans until we see a change in policy.

The momentum behind this push is real and it shows that the community is not staying silent about these policies. Post the link to your Facebook page and text three friends because we need to ensure the administration cannot ignore us. Email your representative to demand they hold this institution accountable for its exclusionary goals.

in 1987, I had to lie about who I was in order to graduate. I was told by my class sponsor that I would never get a teaching job in the state if he could prove that I was gay. This discrimination needs to stop now.

I witnessed so many of my classmates suffer discrimination for their orientation (or perceived orientation) at the hands of Asbury. I would love to see Asbury change its stance on discrimination and love everyone equally.

I attended Asbury College when the black were not allowed to attend. I have been ashamed of that record. (1959 E. Stanley Jones withdrew fro the Board of Trustees.) I appose discrimination of the LGBT persons. We as to be loving and persons who reach out to others.

One of the only reasons I have decided not to attend Asbury is this horrid discrimination. Being bi myself, I would feel completely unsafe on a campus as unjust as this one.

One thing Asbury taught me is that loving people is more important than correcting them. This lesson wasn't taught by policy, but by the people that made Asbury great. It's time for the policies to reflect the people.

As the initiator of the petition, I should mention that I'm both an alum (Unashamed Class of 2010) and someone who was denied the chance to apply for a position as an adjunct professor. I'll also mention that I still hold this place very dear, despite my complicated relationship with it.

I am ashamed to have graduated from Asbury, I regret my decision to have attended such a place.
