In 1994, the college's first recognized LGBT student organization was founded and took up the cause of updating the non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2001, after years of debate, the policy was updated, but only to include sexual orientation. In 2015, gender identity is still not a part of the non-discrimination policy. This means that talented people who care about such things may decide not to work or study at Berea, because the omission demonstrates a lack of care for human rights. By signing this petition I wish for Berea College to show that it does care about human rights by adding gender identity to the non-discrimination policy.
The volume of support has reached a level where the administration can no longer ignore this policy oversight. I am currently finalizing a formal letter to the Board of Trustees to request a meeting regarding these necessary language changes.
