the city just voted to reject the proposal for bloor. we were loud enough to stop a bad plan and im so grateful for everyone who stood by me on this. lets keep paying attention to what happens next so we can make sure they actually do this right.

Final supporters
The city of Toronto has proposed to build a 30-bed men's shelter at 854 Bloor W, operated by the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre (CONC). City Council votes on the proposal November 3, 2015. We ask that Council reject the proposal for the following reasons:
- CONC previously operated an eight bed shelter at the same location. This shelter was poorly managed and ultimately closed because CONC could not integrate with the community or keep its shelter residents safe. We want the city to find a capable community partner that can work with us to help our most vulnerable citizens.
- Neighbourhood stakeholders, including business owners and residents' associations, have not been part of the consultation process. Instead the Shelter, Support & Housing Administration has secretly negotiated this deal and informed us at the last minute.
- The City has no previous dealings with CONC, but is going to give more than $2 million over three years - greater than 25% of the budget to address our homelessness crisis - to an agency with a failing track record.
We want Council to reject this Band-Aid proposal and work with us to find alternate, lasting solutions to help our homeless.

im still waiting for someone from the city to actually sit down and talk to us about why this plan is such a mess. it feels like they are just trying to push this through before anyone asks any real questions so keep the pressure on.

the momentum we have right now is honestly incredible and shows how much this neighborhood cares. city hall is starting to notice the pressure so lets keep this energy high until they actually listen to us.

This neighborhood has undergone a major change in recent years with so many young families moving in. I think there would be far better sites, even in the local area, that would minimize the impact on the community and dilute the effect of more than 30 men hanging around the streets day and night. It's a terrible idea.
The 8 bed shelter didn't work the last time, how is it supposed to work this time as a 30 bed shelter? Same organization and management. Irresponsible to place a shelter near an LCBO, bars, children's care, small startup business and parks!
Thank you for the chance to make a statement. I felt totally fooled by the premise of the meeting hosted by CONC. The only reason CONC held a community meeting was because they had to hold a meeting as part of the application process. CONC is not interested in hearing the community before the shelter is approved and I do not think they will protect our community if the shelter is approved.
Homeless shelters are indeed necessary, but I have little faith in CONC's ability to run such a shelter based on its prior track record in this neighborhood.
As another shelter similar to this was unsuccessful at this location, I vote to reject the proposal

I attended the Oct. 26th meeting. As this is the first notice which was received. Our home is about 50 houses south of bloor and Mr. Layton states he handed out 3000 flyers informing the community of the proposal and that there would be an information night on Oct. 5th. Where was our flyer. It is obvious that they did not want the local residence involved. Last nights meeting was attended by many who do not live in the community, and when CONC & the City housing spokes person were asked serious questions no concrete answers were provided. NO to this shelter in a already vulnerable community.

As a woman and resident in the neighborhood, I have only recently started to feel safer walking along Bloor street. It is concerning that residents were not reached out to prior to this item going to vote at City Council. This act goes directly against healthy practices of community engagement and two-way communication.
