"$21 Monthly Fee" Questionable Union Gas Bill
"You’ll notice on this bill many different charges like storage, delivery, etc. The most disturbing part of this bill is the monthly fee of $21, which Union Gas charges every customer regardless of how much natural gas they use. This monthly charge is for maintaining a safe gas distribution 24 hours a day. This explanation can be found on page two of your bill.
You’ll notice they don't say a “guarantee” of safe and continued supply, which in itself contradicts a safe and continuous supply. As many of us know, there are no guarantees in life. So why are we paying this monthly charge? Will our lives be jeopardized or supply jeopardized if this charge is taken off our bill?
I’m surprised the car, tire and meat manufacturers do not try the same logic on the public in stopping any recalls. It should be noted that an employee of Union Gas once suggested to me that this monthly charge is also required to cover any visit to your home should a problem be encountered. Now I ask, when in the last 10 years have you had a Union Gas representative to your house for a problem and did this call warrant the approximate $2,000 you've paid over the last 10 years?
Imagine how many millions of dollars they are bringing in just with this monthly charge. I'd sure like to know what the disparity is between this monthly charge and the so-called safe and continuous supply with their actual cost. Last year, the monthly charge was $20 and now it is $21. Probably to keep their shareholders happy.
Natural gas is at an all-time low due to abundant supply in the world but rest assured, the natural gas suppliers will look for a way to create a shortage the same way the gas producers do at the pumps.
