Turnitin has announced that it intends to update its End User License Agreement (EULA), introducing new terms that would allow their platform to use student submissions to train AI services. This is harmful for a variety of reasons.
By submitting your coursework to Turnitin (Currently mandatory at UoB) you are giving up precious rights over your own work, and training AI that aims to benifit from your research and writing. These same AI models are the ones replacing our future jobs before we even graduate university. The same ones that require vast data centres that are destroying UK wildlife. It is unjust to force students to hand over their work to machines that want to steal it for the gain of a private company. We believe your work is your own, period.
What the licensing agreement is actually saying:
Students submitting work from outside the EU (yes that includes the UK Post-Brexit!) grant Turnitin a licence described as “non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable”, bounded by the stated purpose of providing and improving the service.
Southampton University has already announced that it will stop using Turnitin for new students immediately and look for alternatives for students already mid-way through their course and phase out Turnitin use by the end of 2027.
We are requesting that University of Bristol do the same.
We have drafted a letter to the university academic board, but we need your help! A request is much more powerful when backed by the student body. If we can reach 5,000 students and make it clear to the university that students do not want their hard work being used to train AI-slop, then we have a chance of stopping this from happening.

I'm critical of AI overall, but even at my most generous I cannot stand for AI to profit off of me and my hard work without any input from my end.
This is unethical and unacceptable. It is absolutely absurd that universities are allowing AI to be trained off our work. It’s disgusting.

if I can get expelled from the use of ai, then ai training should absolutely have no place in an prestigious research and further education institution.
