We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Brookline, respectfully ask the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Zone 6 leadership, and City officials once again dedicate resources for another targeted nighttime and early-morning operation to address the recent rash of thefts from vehicles, vehicle break-ins, and vehicle thefts in our neighborhood.

For many Brookliners, this is the single greatest quality-of-life issue facing the community.

Beginning last year, our neighborhood experienced an unsettling surge in the number of car thefts and thefts from vehicles during the early morning hours. After months of encouraging the community to use 911 to report these crimes to the police, the Brookline Block Watch demonstrated to the police the need for additional enforcement resources. In April, the Pittsburgh Police reallocated internal resources to conduct a focused, overnight operation that resulted in the arrest of a local teenager suspected of committing more than 100 vehicle break-ins across South Pittsburgh.

When those police resources were dedicated to directly solving the problem facing our community, the operation proved immediately and highly successful.

Unfortunately, Brookline faces the same issue today: a recent rash of car theft and thefts from vehicles.

Fortunately, we believe that success can be repeated.

We respectfully ask the Bureau of Police to once again dedicate resources to similar targeted overnight operations to stem the present wave of vehicle crimes.

As Brookliners, we will continue to report every incident to 911, share security camera footage whenever possible, and become involved with the Brookline Block Watch.

This petition will be presented at the Brookline Block Watch meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday, July 14, as a demonstration of the community’s support for another focused enforcement effort and continued partnership between neighbors and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

This has to stop before something bad happens. I've lived in Brookline all my life and growing up here we would never do things like this if someone did there were consequences. This community is getting way out of control Im scared for my young grandchildren.

I live on Berkshire and my car along with my husbands & children have all been broken into & personal belongings strewn about the vehicles as well as up and down our street more than a handful of times. There was a time when my son’s back window was busted out to have his bookbag stolen. My husband works the overnight shift at the airport leaving me home alone overnights 5/7 days with my disabled son. It seems like these individuals are becoming more brazen by the day

We cannot ignore “petty” crime. It starts small and grows like a snowball down the hill as the thief gains confidence that there are no consequences. Please provide consequences!!

We are urging local law enforcement to conduct a “full court press” to stop the youth terrorizing our beloved neighborhood!

Thankfully we have a garage but we are very aware of the issue that needs to be deterred.
