PETITION TO AMEND TEXAS TRANSPORTATION CODE § 545.0605
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of roadway safety in Texas, respectfully request that the Texas Legislature amend Texas Transportation Code § 545.0605 to allow lane filtering and lane splitting by motorcycles under limited and controlled conditions.
Proposed Conditions:
- Motorcycles may lane filter or lane split only when surrounding traffic is traveling at 20 miles per hour or less.
- When traffic is completely stopped, motorcycles may proceed between lanes at a speed not exceeding 15 miles per hour.
- Lane filtering and lane splitting shall not be permitted when traffic is traveling above 20 miles per hour.
- Lane filtering and lane splitting shall not be permitted through intersections.
- Lane filtering and lane splitting shall not be permitted during heavy rain or other conditions that significantly reduce visibility or roadway safety.
We believe these changes can improve rider safety, reduce rear-end collisions involving motorcycles, and improve traffic flow when implemented with reasonable restrictions.
By signing below, I support consideration of legislation to amend Texas Transportation 545.0605 consistent with the principles outlined in this petition
In the heat, my bike overheats if I'm standing or sitting in slow traffic. All year, it's awful having my rear tire bumped by people not paying attention. Y'all want us out the way; let us get out the way.
