SAVE THE DAM IN JULIETTE, GA! 🌊

If you’ve ever visited Juliette, Georgia, or watched the beloved movie Fried Green Tomatoes, you know that Juliette is more than just a small town. It is a place rich in history, charm, community, and tradition. And at the heart of it all is the Ocmulgee River. For generations, the river and its dam have been part of the fabric of our community. For over 100 years, this dam has been part of the landscape we know and love. The river has shaped our traditions, brought people together, provided recreational opportunities, and helped sustain the tourism that keeps this special little town alive.

Now, efforts led by the University of Georgia and The Nature Conservancy, with federal funding supporting the initiative, are seeking to remove the dam to improve passage for fish species such as sturgeon and shad. Keep in mind, these fish would not be able to travel much farther upstream due to the dam in Jackson. We understand that protecting wildlife and our natural resources is important. But we also believe that the future of Juliette deserves careful consideration of the full environmental, historical, economic, and community impacts of such a significant and irreversible change.

Is dam removal the best path forward?
Could these resources be directed toward other pressing environmental concerns in Monroe County and beyond? This is about more than a dam. It is about preserving a historic landmark, protecting the recreational opportunities that draw people to the river, supporting local tourism and businesses, and respecting the history and character of a community that has stood for generations. The dam has been part of Juliette for over a century. We believe decisions about its future should be made with thoughtful consideration of all available options and the long-term consequences for the community and surrounding environment.

You do NOT have to live in Juliette to sign this petition!

Juliette is a special place. Its history matters. Its people matter. Its future matters.

Let's make sure our voices are heard before a decision is made that could permanently change the place we know and love.

I was raised here and enjoy this beautiful area and its people. Please leave the dam in place. It's more than a dam, its like a 'family member' for those who love Juliette. Please don't take away another beautiful part of nature. It can never be replaced or put back once it's gone.

I grew up in this town and the dam is a part of history and iconic. If they are just going to get stuck at the other dam why tear this one down?

It's a part of history, visited there twice and seen the movie I believe it needs to stay. Wouldn't be the same without it.

Because this is a staple in my hometown. And the people who live there have done their best to keep it clean. And there’s no reason to destroy.

It's part of history for the town. It's part of Juliette & needs to remain the same. Stop erasing history.

I love the area and feel the dam is a special part of Juliette and its history! Nothing to gain by removing it.
