To the BVSD Board of Education and Superintendent:
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, students, staff, neighbors, and community members of Douglass Elementary, urge the Board to reject the proposed closure of Douglass Elementary ahead of the September 22, 2026 vote.
Since 2022, BVSD has used clear, public criteria, developed by its own Long Range Advisory Committee, to determine which schools warrant closure review. Douglass never met that bar. It was never flagged, never given a community process, and never named in the district's own engagement sessions. It appeared as a closure candidate on August 25, with a Board vote scheduled just four weeks later, while other schools facing similar decisions received years of meetings and dedicated planning support.
This closure would break up a school community that many families specifically chose, disrupt continuity for students in the ICAN program, and eliminate a walkable neighborhood school, all without the process the district promised its own communities.
We're asking the Board to:
- Remove Douglass from the September 22 vote.
- Apply the district's own advisory and community-engagement process to Douglass before any decision is made.
- Publicly share the data behind this recommendation and hold dedicated public forums for Douglass families.
- Give academic merit and demonstrated school success meaningful weight in the decision, and explain how performance, educational quality, leadership, and community strength were weighed in selecting Douglass for closure.
Douglass deserves the same fair process every other school got. Please add your name below.

They are eliminating a really well performing neighborhood school, in exchange of a focus program. They expect the students to transfer to a school which facilities are a hazard with the excuse of increasing their enrollment but Douglass has a better enrollment numbers by far. Douglass has been teaching the neighborhood students for generations and they’re community is amazing. This radical change is benefiting no one, we were completely blindsided by this decision.
